School-Based Phonics Program

ALL children have the right to learn to read.

Our research seeks to shift current literacy approaches to implementing systematic phonics-based instruction for children who use AAC. The ALL technology, based on the ALL curriculum developed by Light & McNaughton (2009), incorporates a systematic, phonics-based literacy instruction with materials adapted to meet the needs of individuals who use AAC. The ALL Technology has additional features that further support intervention fidelity, including: live data collection by the technology, systematic lesson sequences based on data captured from machine learning, and pre-made adapted materials for individuals who cannot use speech.

Outreach

Providing state-of-the-art research and best practices to the community.

The goal of this research study is to determine the effectiveness of the technology-mediated literacy intervention (ALL; Accessible Literacy Learning) in increasing literacy skills of individuals who use AAC. The technology-mediated ALL program combines machine learning, systematic and sequential lessons, and adapted materials for people with complex communication needs. Our rationale for the project, supported by preliminary data, is that we need simple evidence-based tools that service providers can implement and maintain with the time, skills, and resources they have. The intervention is evidence-informed and promising, but has not been implemented by common service providers in schools and is also novel in the number of skills taught, and therefore needs to be tested in this context prior to larger-scale evaluation.
